The whole recycling program is nothing but a way for the City of Tulsa to generate more revenue, and reduce service. They eliminated low generator service, and twice weekly pickup which was about $8.50 monthly. Then increased it to over $15 a month, and once a week pickup under the recyling program with the largest bin initially provided. It's over $12 for the smallest bin if you elect to use that size.
The new service dictates required lengths/girth to two feet of limb bundles, and special clear bags for leaves/clippings and requires additonal pay stickers for each. On the same bill of the new recyling service the city increased both water and sewer rates. My bill jumped over 21% in one billing cycle.
On top of that, I've left my trash and recycled bins at the curb on pickup day spaced and facing the correct direction to the street as required with neither being emptied. I think the citizens of Tulsa should have made the decision on how they wanted THEIR trash/recycling service implemented. I believe in recycling, but this is not the way it should be done. I hope this is repealed asap.
Recycling should be mandatory as it is in most cities the size of Tulsa. I grew up in a SMALL village near Green Bay Wi, mandatory recycling since 1970's. Tulsa should charge the people more if they choose not to participate than the people who do. The cost would be more fairly distributed & Tulsa & the environment would benfit. It should no longer be an option to distroy our environment or to reward the ones who are too lazy to make the effort.
Let me clarify. Most of the trash you have picked up is not even recycled here, but is compressed and then sent to China where THEY do all of the recycling. We only pick it up. Again I hope this is somehow sinking in to your heads that this isn't all that much better than throwing it in a landfill.
I'm all for recycling, but I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that almost all of the trash that gets recycled is SHIPPED to China to make goods that are then sold back to the U.S. That's actually much worse for the environment in terms of transportation costs and emissions. So until the trash is recycled mostly in the U.S., we're not really accomplishing anything. Just a footnote.
They seem to be saying that it is cheaper to not recycle. Ummm are they not missing the point? It is more responsible to do so and something that we need to do.
Also, they are only counting the number of recyclers by how many are enrolled in their curbside pick up service. I recycle and know a ton of others that do so and don't do the curbside, but take it to the MET and other such places.
Tulsa needs to come into this century and get its head out of its butt!
I moved here from Phoenix which has had a recycling program for years. There is still twice a week pickup, however one pickup is trash & the other is recyclables. They also use one-man automated trucks for both pickups. Every household gets two bins the same size, green for trash & blue for recycling. Not sure what size, prob 96 gal. Yard waste is put with regular trash or held for quarterly uncontained trash pickup. Was amazed that Tulsa doesn't use automated trucks. Manual pickup is much more costly and slower.
Please allow 4-6 weeks for processing. No refunds are issued. Back issues are available for $10/copy.
