Hey concerned taxpayer, the only reason Dec 25 is a Holiday is because "we" celebrate the birth of our savior; Jesus the Christ and honor him. It really doesn't matter what the actual day of Christ's birth is, we just don't know what the actual date was. What does matter is, we as a nation "choose" to honor him on that day. It is an official national holiday. We have over 200 years of American history honoring that tradition and hundreds and hundreds of years of other countries doing the same. You do not have to participate if you choose not to. In any case; we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon[a] his shoulder, and his name shall be called[b] Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
These types of articles always make me so mad. First of all, Simonson's assertion that the birth of Jesus is the 'historical' reason for celebrating Dec. 25 is wrong. The Catholic church chose Dec. 25 to celebrate Jesus' birth to compete with the winter solstice & pagan traditions. According to a History channel documentary, Jesus' birth was likely in March (Hebrew translation of the bible). Second, the 'X' in Xmas is of Greek origin: "XP" are the first 2 letters of the Greek word for Christ (savior) and it's often shortened to simply 'X'. Using 'Xmas' doesn't take Christ out of Christmas, it just simplifies it, let's be honest (at least in the US), for lazy people who don't want to write out 'Christmas'. It has nothing to do with politics - it has to do with self-righteous Christians who insist that this is THEIR holiday. It's not. Christmas may be our tradition & holiday, but we don't own the day, nor should we tell others how to say or spell it. If you celebrate Christmas, celebrate through your actions and with your heart. Nobody can take that away from you.
