Re: It's the Economy, Stupid, Part II

What about the Kwikset plant that shut down in Bristow, resulting in more than 1,000 jobs moving to Mexico, or Wrangler closing its plant in Seminole - 700 jobs gone overseas. What has come along to replace these jobs.
Theory is one thing; reality another.

Re: Works for Us

In 2000, then Senator Phil Gramm of Texas authored
legislation which has colloquially become known as the 'Enron loophole'. The legislation exempted 'e-trading' of energy futures from regulation.
Unregulated speculation in oil futures is a likely cause of today's exorbitant gasoline prices.

Re: Credit Cards and Predictable Unintended Consequences

   Matthew 18:23-35 (New International Version)
"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[a] was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
"The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.[b] He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.
"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'
"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."
   Footnotes:
   a. Matthew 18:24 That is, millions of dollars
   b. Matthew 18:28 That is, a few dollars

The big banks, Chase, Bank of America , were like the first man in the parable above – they were bailed out –Chase 50 billion; Bank of America 45 billion TARP money received.
Yet, did these big banks forgive debt or lower their interest rates of holders of their credit cards. No.

Sorry Mr. Hamilton had a bad experience at Jamils. I'm a native Tulsan who has lived in Washington, DC for over twenty years, and dined on steak at Charlie Palmers, the Palm, the National Press club. None have tasted better than the beef I enjoy and have enjoyed for years at Jamil's. My family and I just ate there around a month ago. The relish tray, ribs, bologna, cabbage rolls - served in the Lebanese mezze tradition, along with the hospitality of our waitress, who was quite pretty I might add, made it a very enjoyable experience. I recommend Jamil's - can't wait to eat there next time I am in Tulsa.

Let's also forgive credit card debt. Nobody would open a credit card account if they thought they would end up paying 30% interest

   Yes indeed.
One may notice that several members of the Advisory Board of Governors of the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma were also on the Right to Work steering committee back in 2001.

Re: What Unions?
 3/17/2011 - 2:13pm
White collar workers are already unionized.
   The National Writers Union (www.nwu.org);
Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (www.speea.org); SEIU organizes college professors.
I'll bet there are a lot of other white collar workers that would like to organize as well.
We're all in it together, brothers and sisters!

Re: Thrifty Families and Other Lies

The $700 billion in TARP money that the government gave the big banks to bail them out would have paid all the credit card debt in America. In other words, we could have forgiven all the credit card debt - put some change in the average person's pocket, thus stumulating the economy.

Have the banks dropped their interest rates? No.

How did interest rates go from 5% to 30% anyway.

There used to be a valuable resource called The Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (ACIR) that tried to bridge the gap in regards to Federal/State regulatory issurs.
   Sadly, it is defunct.
The archived web site of the ACIR can be found at the University of North Texas's 'Cyber Cemetery'
