Dude, you guys have GOT to get a handle on your cover concepts and designs... you've been on a losing streak for the past month.
And making your biggest advertiser look like a complete tool? Severely outdated headshot on top of a grotesque blow-up santa ball... What the hell were you guys thinking?
I'm reluctant to comment for fear of being reprinted in the Letters to the Editor section again. So I'll just litter my post with "fucks":
Fucking great fucking review. Spot fucking on. I really fucking liked this sentence:
"I'm a huge fan of testicular trauma, scatology and warm (or cold) hearted cruelty, but I need it to be inspired and witty -- the last two words I would associate with Grown Ups."
Pretty fucking funny. You word-rape with the best of 'em.
poor treasure... he probably thinks the only good tacos are at el guapo's.
This is just more small-minded Tulsa bigotry and fear. Go to Austin, there's a taco stand on every corner and they're usually better than any mexican restaurant. It's a normal part of living in a city.
That also goes for the stands in Tulsa- Tacos Velvet Elvis, the stand in the parking lot of Las Americas, the permanent stands like Mr. Taco and Tacos Don Francisco-- all amazing, and free of the processing and corporate handling that taints the food at places like On the Border.
A friend of mine ate at On the Border recently and found a metal washer in her enchilada. More than once i've had corporate mexican food and and bit into the remains of the plastic storage bag from the refried beans. This has never happened to me at any taco stand, and the food tastes infinitely better.
Open your small minds, treasure and joejoe. Or even better, get of our town. There's an excess number of bigots in this city, and it's time to do some house cleaning. I say we round 'em up on buses, drive them across the border and drop them off in Mexico.
On second thought, I'd never want to do that to Mexico.
Can somebody explain that sub-head to me? The common splices are frying my brain. Are you saying that sometimes Terry Simonson knows the score, but only when he's first violin or bass drum?
Or did you mean to say that Simonson always knows the score, because sometimes he's first violin or bass drum?
I'm sorry guys, I only criticize because I love, but that may be the most non-sensical, grammatically confused headline in the history of this paper.
Thank God. Mr. Hamilton has just revealed himself to be the only food critic in Tulsa who's worth a damn.
Jamil's is just like all the other outdated steakhouses in Tulsa: they serve good cuts of meat but that's pretty much it. Terrible service, mediocre apps and time-warp ambience. They won't be able to rest on their laurels forever. Hopefully this article inspires the owner to seriously re-think how he operates his business.
Not to be nit-picky, but your use of the word "chef" on the cover is incorrect, and a little disrespectful. Less than half the models featured are actually chefs, and many of them aren't even cooks.
"Chef" is a title that's earned, not a generic description for food service workers. It's like calling a nurse "Doctor". Makes you look ignorant and undermines your credibility.
Fantastic job, Joe. By far the best article to ever be published in this paper regarding the Tulsa film scene. Realistic but forward-thinking.
The complete absence of both childish optimism/delusion and callous negativity is quite the feat, considering your subject. The facts speak for themselves.
Maybe kitsch 'n' sync should be renamed "venues where the refined form of pop mimicry and fantasy role play may be respectfully viewed and executed by the sophisticated denizens of our fair city."
It's karaoke, dumbasses. What exactly is it about drunk idiots butchering forgettable pop songs that demands respect and reverence?
I'm intimately familiar with the music of both Dorian Small and Of Montreal. I like both, but like many young bands, Dorian Small has a tendency to wear his influences on his sleeve. It's not a bad thing, I'm just looking forward to hearing more evolved tunes from him in the future because I really enjoyed this record.
The Of Montreal comparison is obvious; anyone who really knows the music of Kevin Barnes will hear it immediately. I spoke to Small several months ago and asked him about the similarities, and even he acknowledge the strong influence. This review wasn't written in a vacuum.
And the Mars Volta review was written by UTW's head music writer, Gary Hizer, not myself.
JordanR is correct. If you walk into Borders and base your judgment of literature today on the front display of bestsellers and new releases, you're not getting the full picture. Same with movies. Dozens of movies slide under the radar each year, and its not just "film school high-horse" indie and foreign releases.
One of the funniest movies I've seen in a while is The Foot Fist Way, which is an independent film that Will Ferrell discovered and helped distribute. It should've been a summer blockbuster, but absolutely nobody went to see it. Therefore, in many people's minds its considered an "off the radar" indie, but the truth is that its simply a very funny comedy made on a shoe string budget.
People who complain about the state of movies today need to dig deeper. For every shitty hollywood formula blockbuster that comes out each week, I can point you to a lesser-known movie that is worth your time.
And OKJerm-- it's true that foreign movies can suck just as badly as hollywood. Fortunately, the american indie studios that acquire foreign films for distribution usually have pretty high standards for what it is they're willing to invest in. Foreign films are a tough sell, and studios can't expect to bank transformer dollars on them. So they appeal to the critics to help promote the movies. Which means the movies have to be good.
Not saying that every foreign film that makes its way to america is great, but there is a screening process that weeds out a lot of the crap.
And by the way, between cory and I combined, we've reviewed at least 30 or 40 "beyond the radar" movies so far this year. Unfortunately those movies are just white noise to many people.
Finally read this, and must agree with the other comments (discounting mr. status quo grumpy pants). You did an awesome job, my favorite story you've written thus far.
With all due respect (and if I may be so bold as to speak on behalf of the paper), the cover story for Fiawna Forte has been planned for the last six months, well before the concept of a separate ABoT Music Awards. Same goes for the Red Dirt Rangers cover.
Yes, Philip Spicer Phillips is indeed my roommate. So what?
Philip was out of town when the review was posted. As a friend, he keeps up with my writing. He posted the comments on his own. I did not ask him to. I do not need anyone defending me. I fail to see how this "OUTS" me.
I actually just recently listened to No Age for the first time (after nearly a year of people telling me I need to hear it). I like it, but it's going to take some time to grow on me.
M83 barely missed the cut. In retrospect though, I should have made some mention of it. That album is phenomenal.
Fleet Foxes is great. It hasn't quite caught on with me like it has for many people... I need to revisit it, but I've been way too distracted by the Department of Eagles record.
I have absolutely no problem with Cook as a human being. He had a great reputation around town as a very kind and gracious person-- never met him personally, but he seems like a cool dude.
I don't like the music, but I don't blame Cook personally for it. I know he's paying his dues and is running after the HUGE career opportunity that American Idol provided.
I hope that as he continues to grow into his role as a nationally-recognized musician, he'll also grow as an artist.
There's no way around the fact that the music is stale, generic, formulaic garbage. But that doesn't make him a bad person, and it doesn't mean he can't eventually do something that will actually resonate in the future.

Re: Local. Camera. Action!
At what point did I convey movie making in Tulsa as apocalyptic?
Why would you say that you can make a better movie than these guys? Do it. Get the funding and do it, or keep quiet.
and if you can make a better movie with their resources, then you can make a good movie without their resources.
Pay me the courtesy of directing me to your work with a youtube link so I can see for myself. E-mail me at jkline@urbantulsa.com.

Re: Flat on his Artistic Face
First track is entitled "Declaration."
But you guys already knew that.
I was given a copy of the disc that did not have a track list, so I had to go online to find the song titles. I mixed up my words. Apologies.
Thanks for reading!
