Journalism 101 violation: Where is this place??? East 11th Street, even with the qualification of being "just west of the TU campus, in an old service station" is not the same as an address. The guy was nice enough to give you an interview so I think he was kind of expecting you could mention the specific address.
Sarcasm thick enough to spread with a knife there, BCJedi -- I like it!! Exactly my impression of Arnie's foray into illogic land for this week. By my estimates and evaluation, the last honest liberal died with the passing of Hubert Humphrey. The current edition, as exemplified by Arnie, is little more than a dim reflection without the guiding principles or common sense of their philosophical forebears.
The sixth paragraph does not properly report the fact that open carry will require the same license, training, and background check as concealed carry. The new license is more correctly a License to Carry with the licensee's option on how to carry, open or concealed.
Given that words mean things, I'd like to take a moment to deconstruct and consider the context of the word "proletariat" in The Capitolist column on 3/30. In the broadest general definitions I could find, the proletariat are the non-wealth or non-property holding members of society. The more specialized definitions draw from the general definition with original application in Roman law and later in Marxist theory for the societal order of those who labor for wages.
As I read the rest of the article, I believe the evidence supports a conclusion that the intended meaning originates from Marxist theory where application of the taxing power is alright as long as it balances the scales of social or economic class. That sounds like a discussion between a plumber and a presidential candidate sans TelePrompter a few years back. It was great political theater that exposed the candidate for what he was and is but the American press glossed it over.
Mr. Hamilton's column is equally glossy. He really should be more forthright in helping the reader understand his meaning. Personally, I find the Marxist dialectic to be really stale as persuasive political analysis. I bet it got good marks in his college PoliSci classes, though.
My Perspective, please allow me to fully endorse your response to GeeGirl and the article. Well stated and on target with every point!
I will expand upon your irony comment to note that it appears in the lexicon of the LiberalSocialistProgressive, "character" is defined as incessant whining accompanied by reaching for everybody else's wallet to pay for the LSP's desired "social justice".
1) The Mayor was not well-served by his word processor, knowledge of the English language, or the UTW editorial staff. "Principal(s)" was used 5 times when the correct word was "principle(s)". Draw what conclusions you will...
2) The Mayor's minimalist response to OKC as a glaring counterpoint to his argument for the Mayor-Council government form is interesting. I'd like to have him detail how the difference in the employment of the citizens in OKC allows them to have a city government that serves the citizens rather than the egos of those elected to serve.
Full disclosure: I lived in OKC from 1981-2009 but now live in Sand Springs. However,in a metropolitan area, nearly everybody's economic well-being is tied to the primary city and its political climate. On that basis, I believe I am qualified to offer comments and observations.
"My goal is to lift the curtains at the state Capitol, providing a regular primer on the key players and issues facing our state in the early days of our second century."
Good luck with that. Since the media of every political persuasion couldn't get the job done on Gene Stipe, I have my doubts about your likelihood of success.
Rall sure never lets the facts stand in the way of his rants, does he?
Fact: the protester in NH was separated from the President's venue by several blocks and several hours. He had permission to be where he was. There was never any direct threat to The Annointed One. I am certain the Secret Service would have acted had there been a threat in someplace more than Ted Rall's fevered imagination.
Fact: the protester with an AR15-model rifle in AZ was a black man. Yet, Rall finds it necessary to launch into a KKK broad-brush rant a mere two paragraphs later in his column. Further note, most of the media have cropped that picture to take away the easily-noted fact about this man's race. I wonder why they would do that?
Fact: in both venues, both men were absolutely within their rights and the laws of the state to be armed. That would be why the authorities did not act - there was no cause.
This debate is not about healthcare alone. People are waking up to observe that the government is intruding further into their lives and they are realizing that there is a broader debate. Healthcare is merely a metaphor in this moment. Actually, cap and trade is more intrusive to our everyday life but it just hasn't risen to the top yet.
As to John Lott being "too clever by half", I would suggest that Ted should take a look in the mirror. Rall set out in the column to show us his intellect. I would suggest he shows us his rear end instead.
I appreciate your pro bono space for budding politicians to share their thoughts with us. The example provided here was just too classic to ignore with the mindless expository on "lead(ing) the charge to ensure the National Guard has every resource" and drawing upon the memory of a Missing in Action uncle to reflect the hero aura Eisenberger appears to strongly desire as his own. I suggest the erstwhile politician might want to consider actually walking in those combat boots for real in order to gain a legitimate appreciation for the words service and sacrifice before he aspires to legislative office.
Thanks, UTW, for helping to thin the politician herd by letting them expose themselves as the control freak twits they are. Especially the ones that would wish to lay claim to the Keating legacy of carpetbagging and pure flim-flam.
