Re: Think Before You Vote
 11/ 9/2009 - 9:15pm
I just double-checked the latest campaign contribution filings which were updated thru 5:00pm November 3rd.

Here is the exact reporting from the Tulsa Election Board Office. Anyone wishing to verify can do so after election day by calling the Election Board office telephone. They tell me they will be too busy tomorrow (Tuesday, election day) to answer telephone calls and will have a recording on the phone.

"Democrat challenger Maria Barnes, a former councilor, has raised a total of $24,810. Of that, $10,425 is from this reporting period."

"Among her donations are $500 from Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor, $1,000 from Tulsa Firefighters Local 176 PAC, $1,000 from the Transport Workers Union PCC, $500 from AFSCME and $5,000 from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers"
   Thats it.

No contributions from The FOP, the unknown "Back the Bdges", or any individual, known Tulsa Police Officer in the minimum mandatory reporting amount of $200 or more. ....... *Of special note was no contribution from Mayoral candidate Tom Adelson, as well as no endrosement from Senator Tom Adelson.

UTW readers can make their own determination as to the truthfulness of the Barnes supporters who post these claims.

Opps, we either have a poster pretty wrong, AGAIN, or a candidate that has failed to report a campaign contributiuon.

Democrat Maria Barnes has raised $14,385.84 and spent $10,694.57. She reported $2,305.54 in contributions of $200 or less and a carryover balance of $9,730.30 from a previous campaign. Her other donors were; $250: Larry Mocha; $400: James and Lisa Perrault; $500: the Just Progress PAC, David and Susan Johnson and Arthur Youmans Jr..

any more vicious comments from Barnes supporters?

Keep them coming. The voters want to see them.

The telephone number for the FOP is posted for anyone wishing to verify this falsehood.

a simple telephone call to the local office of the Fraternal Order of Police will verify the TRUTH to any interested reader of Urban Tulsa Weekly.

These campaigns need to be truthful. Viters need an honest discussion of the issues at hand. Not wild exagerated claims that verification blows out as hot air.

I find it very troubling that Barnes supporters don't seem to have the courage to write opinion columns, with verifiable facts.

I find it more troubling with Barnes supporters attack a former firefighter who put his life on the line for our safety and protection. These people will do anything. That's scary. Liberal progessive views are one thing, but attacking a public servant for giving his views is disgusting.

Adam, good article. You probably should have told ua a little about yourself. IE: are you conected with the Adelson campaign? Give us a follow-up.

I am undecided, and still evaluating the candidates. I would reocmmend one thing to Mr. Adelson. Quit using the fact that his Dad is a well-known doctor in his televison commercials. I'm very happy for the doctor, and he is probably a great person, but what does it have to do with Tom Adelson's candacy?

   Thanks for the comments.

shelly, why would you launch a personal attack against someone who offers their opinion. The article sounds to me like it was written by someone with pretty good inside knowledge.
If you disagree, then instead of personal attacks, why don't you send in a rebuttal. And sign the rebuttal with your full name, just as the former firefighter did. I'll bet that UTW would consider your opposing opinion if submitted. If you have public safety experience, tell us what it is. Or do you lack that inside knowledge. Do you only quote campaign talking points?
I actually see many errors in what you stated. I could point out many innacuracies in what you stated, but I will only mention one that any reader of UTW could very easily verify for themselves.
You are correct that the firefighters union endorsed Barnes, but you are 100% wrong that the policemen's union endorsed Barnes. I called and checked when someone on the Tulsa World website made the same claim. Perhaps that was you.
The FOP is NOT ENDORSING Maria Barnes. Anyone making that statement should give verifiable proof. If you have no proof, then drop that outlandish claim.
They did not tell me the whole reason why they are not endorsing Barnes, but I think the readers of Mr. Kayser's article can guess why.
Send in your signed rebuttal letter if you want. Other than that, let's allow the voters to decide who they want.
I can tell you as an independent voter living in council dsitrict four I will not be voting for Barnes.

Great article, Terry! Keep up the great work!

By the way, what did your former boss, Randi Miller say about the voters throwing her out of office, faster than a "hot lap" around Bells Park Zingo?
I understand that the current County Commissioners are considering putting a bronze plaque engraved with her name on one of the restroom stalls at the Big Splash water park.
I saw her sweeping up on the midway at the Tulsa State Fair. Nice of Jerry to give her a another job.

Gee,....I guess the regents didn't think fo that,.....did they?

I wish the new interim CEO luck in trying to right this sinking ship. It sounds like she is way, way unestimating exactly how low morale of employees actually is. It's in the sub-basement according to employees I've talked to.
And, I wonder if the interim CEO will explain why the former CEO wasn't at work for several months, while drawing full pay, just before being fired? Yje interim CEO was there,......so why was the gormer CEO AWOL from work, with no one raising the red flag? Was any pay fraud committed?
Will there be full disclosure, or a cover-up?

Re: Primary Concerns

In the time since this very good article came out, I have throughly checked on the credentials of District 4 City Council candidate Elizabeth Wright.
Her credentials are FLAWLESS, as well as she has consistently displayed a strong desire to SERVE TULSA.
I would strongly recommend Democratic voters in District 4 get out and vote FOR ELIZABEHT WRIGHT.
Her opponent, former City Councilor Maria Barnes (who was thrown out of office by her constituents two years ago), has a consiatent track record of SUPPORTING THE INTERESTS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, who now according comprise a very large percentage of those incarcerated in the David Moss Correctional Facility (Tulsa County Jail). All taxpayers in Tulsa, including those citizens of District 4, are paying the bills to house criminals who entered this country illegally. Maria Barnes voted during her term on the Tulsa City Council, that the tulsa Police Department should not have the right or ability to even ask the immigration status of suspected felone. Maria Banres wanted Tulsa to be a sancuary city, whenre illegal aliens could walk the streets without driver's licenses, auto liability insurance, or proper permission to be in the United States of America.
   YES..... for Elizabeth Wright
   NO...... for Maria Barnes

Re: Free Speech SLAPPed

Mr.Rocky Frisco make a very good point, and appears to really be someone who will listen. Mr. Frisco deserves serious consideration from voters who are registered Republicans during next Tuesday's primary.
As far as this "deathly fear of lawsuits" the author of this article seems to have.
TELL THE TRUTH in what you say, and you have NO FEAR OF LAWSUITS. Now if one going to spread lies or half-truths, lets say,....about the a major Tulsa newspaper or something like that, to push your own agenda, then YES,...you do need to fear lawsuits.
Those who tell the truth, the shole truth, and nothing but the truth. However, a certain left-wing nutcase that is connected with an organization called "who owns Tulsa", did get their hand slapped. Can you imagine how that person could have turned this around on the Councilor who threatened the lawsuit, IF SHE HAD BEEN TELLING THE TRUTH? And that old story, "I can't afford the legal costs to defend myself", is the biggest cop-out cover lie we've heard yet.
If you can't back your words up, then shut your mouth. This includes talking about City Councilors, and falsely accusing major newspapers of lieing. If you can back them up, hire the legal team and get after it. All of Tulsa will respect you, however, if you can't back your words up, then crawl back in your fraidy hole and shut up.

Re: Primary Concerns
 8/13/2009 - 11:32am
I read your current UTW printed copy version of this writer's same story (which appears to be longer), and read Maria Barne's comment that "People became complacent" she said of her supporters. "They felt it was a shoo-in. They just didn't get out an vote. Now we know every vote counts. It does matter, and we all should be involved in the process", in reference to her being defeated as an incumbent last election cycle.
The actual truth of the matter is, during her defeat, Distict four voters came out in near record numbers, and cast 2,806 votes with Eric Gomez receiving 53% of the vote, to Barnes losing 47%. This was a higher vote total than any other council district in 2006 (with District 9 coming in second with 2,592 voters showing up at the polls).
It appears, the voters did show up, and quite a few of them cast a vote against Barnes, not necessarily for the releatively "newcomer" Eric Gomez. I think if candidate Barnes will get out in neighborhoods other than her own (she did take good care of her own neighborhood alone), I think she will hear why District 4 voters no longer support her.
And,.....why did Urban Tulsa Weekly allow candidate Elizabeth Wright to submit her high school yearbook photo for publication in the UTW article? I saw her recently, and she appears to be roughly the same age as fellow opponent Rocky Frisco. Why not incoude a current photo?
Keep up the good work on reporting excellent candidate information for voters. Many voters have had enough of "hidden agendas", and more are getting involved.

Re: "Sanctuary City"
 8/12/2009 - 4:19pm
I'm missing the point here about TCB's comment. TCB seeming has studied, or has access to a copy of the City Charter (must be either a current or retired city employee, or an ex-city councilor), but what does it have to do with the guest editorial "Sanctuary City"?
I know the author of that editorial opinion piece very well, and he is a RETIRED CHIEF OFFICER, who served the citizens of Tulsa for about thirty years. He retired due to a critical fireground injury, while serving the citizens of the city he loves. He no longer has to worry about restrictions of his constitutional right to free speech, and speaks out about inept politicians of both political parties. I am very pleased that this information about Barnes was shared with the readers of UTW, many of which reside in City Council District 4. It was very eye opening. I only wish more good samaritans with "insider" information would speak out about those who do not represent the interests of the majority of law-abiding Tulsa taxpayers, who are AMERICAN CITIZENS.

Re: Duffy’s Diner

The Duffy's located at 2424 E. 15th Street, has the same "OK" food as all location, but unfortunately, has the rudest, most discourteous wait staff in all of Tulsa. The most needed "remodelling" this diner needs, is to replace the wait staff with pleasant people, that appreciate you spending your dollars with them. I would recommend you pass up this location.

Re: The Absolute Best of Tulsa 2008
 7/16/2008 - 10:30am
A heartfelt thanks to Urban Tulsa Weekly for once again providing the readers with the listing of the Absolute Best in Tulsa. By the way, with humility, you failed to mention that Urban Tulsa Weekly is the Absolute Best publication in Tulsa.
I know you must have had a lot of close calls, but of all the categories that hit right on the mark, the category of most obnoxious person in Tulsa, has to be now chiseled into granite. Every single one of my dozens, and dozens of friends, along with scores of family members is so sick of Kristen Glover whining thru her nose “Dad will do it”, they are close to leaving our beloved city. I ask for the prayers of other readers,, to pray that dealership president Jim Glover takes this message to heart, and once and for all retires Kristen Glover from television commercials. Absolutely no doubt, his business witl increase, not to mention the fact that Kristen is putting a non-family member spokesman, out of work at Jim Glover Chevrolet. Jim, read this issue, and do the right thing!
