Our city is at the crossroad for change. Despite the spat between the mayor and the council, as destructive as it appears and could be (but probably won't), it shows us somebody cares about something around here. Shake it up and make something happen. That wasn't always the case around here. Tulsa used to be Stepford City, where the status quo and rich made all of the decisions. We were told what to do and we all held our breath as the city died a protracted, somnambulant death.
Leadership isn't born of luxury. Leaders appear in the direst of circumstances, just before all is lost, just when we need them most.
And they don't come from Leadership Tulsa.
They come from you, the readers, the movers and shakers of town. The very people we celebrate each week in these pages, and, in a grand way, each summer as we celebrate our own birthday in July with our ever-loving Absolute Best of Tulsa.
Believe us, we are always tempted to make this a Publisher or Editor's Choice, but our gritty staff rise up and demand we keep it democratic, a voice of the people, and, well, they have all the compelling reasons to agree.
Checks and balances pre-programmed into our very being here at the paper.
Tulsa is always able to turn it around when we all participate and do what we always do: Be and Stay Local!
Urban Tulsa Weekly has been the foundation for this movement for the past 19 years, and we'll continue to spearhead it into our 20th year and beyond. Of course, our arts and entertainment info is a part of that package. And now, more news, more commentary, more cartoons, more events, more fun!
But with all of this comes our extra special edition that includes our 19th Annual "Absolute Best of Tulsa" awards. It's time to celebrate you -- our faithful and ridiculously attractive readers, advertisers, and even those young, hip street cats who don't know how to show their love of this city or of UTW. Your favorite and only alternative newsweekly appreciates your participation in this ever-growing family of movers and shakers so influential and so necessary in the ongoing effort to keep Tulsa the place to live.
Year after year, Urban Tulsa Weekly asks its readers to vote on who and what they think are the Absolute Best -- the best local celebs, the best places for families, the best place to get a bite to eat, the best bar for a sip of wine or to take notice of some hot "attractions." Some winners have their names locked into categories as they've done good business, and you all have enjoyed it year after year. There's always a new kid on the block, though, that's trying to make a name for themselves such as our new downtown ballpark, ONEOK Field.
Winners take a moment to smile and be proud. Readers have noticed you, enjoyed your services and taken the time to vote or campaign in your honor.
Some of the results won't blow anyone's minds as they're pretty predictable, but some were shaken up and are as surprising as a civil, local government. Some we wish were different. Some of the votes were very, very close, with only a handful of ballots separating the winners from the runners up. There were a couple of honorable mentions and a total of 10 ties, too.
Trying to climb the ladder to the top spot, or want to make the final cut? Look at this year's winners and figure out what they've got going on. Make the change and start campaigning for next year. We might see you in the 20th edition of Absolute Best of Tulsa.
The Absolute Best of Tulsa doesn't end with this issue, though as voting for the Absolute Best of Tulsa Music Awards draws to an end. Readers can continue to vote at abotmusicawards.com for their favorites and the absolute best in local music until July 16.
On Thursday, Aug. 5, the Music Awards issue hits stands and gives a run-down of nominees and predictions for winners. The same day, UTW hosts a party at Cain's Ballroom, starting at 7pm, where the winners will be announced. That's all in due time, though.
Without further ado, we give you the biggest, the most complete, the most thorough, the most extensive, the one and only -- Absolute Best of Tulsa.
T-Town Bots
City Councilor
Winner: G.T. Bynum, District 9
Taking the lead on several high-profile initiatives, District 9's G.T. Bynum has had an impressive start to his second term on the City Council. After winning re-election in November 2009 by an almost 3-1 margin over his challenger, Roger Lowry, Bynum championed a measure to ban discrimination among city employees on the basis of sexual orientation, led a task force charged with revamping the city's election laws and has tried to forge a better working relationship between the city and Tulsa County.

Business Leader
Winner: Marilyn Ihloff
President of Ihloff Salon and Day Spa, Marilyn Ihloff, as hair stylist and personal health guru, has been making the city a more beautiful place for the beautiful people to live in for 30 years. That's not what got her to be the Absolute Best Business Leader, though. She's supported community events through the United Way as well as given back to the community through her salon's employees. Not to mention, her salon believes in being green.

Most Effective Public Servant
Winner: Kathy Taylor
Go ahead and enter your preferred baseball cliché here: former mayor Kathy Taylor "hit a home run," "knocked one out of the park," or "slid into home plate" with her almost singlehanded effort to open ONEOK Field. But even after leaving the mayor's office, Taylor continues to "step up to the plate" with style and substance after becoming chief of education strategy and innovation for Oklahoma. With recent legislative reform to better the state's public education system, we might have to start coming up with some new education-related clichés. Apple for the teacher? 'A' for effort? Don't worry, we'll find something that fits.

Most Genuine Public Servant
Winner: Kathy Taylor
When then-Mayor Kathy Taylor called a press conference last summer to announce she would not be seeking re-election just weeks before the filing period was to open, she set off a wild scramble among local politicians jockeying to take her place at City Hall. She also surprised and disappointed many of her ardent supporters, who were counting on Taylor to continue serving as the city's chief executive for a second term. There's been lots of speculation since then about what the future might hold for her, but it's clear UTW readers are eager to see her return to local public service in some capacity.

Most Generous Corporation
Winner: QuikTrip Corp.
It's not just the 49 cent fountain drinks and store clerks' exceptional ability to multitask, chat and make speedy change that make QuikTrip a winner. This booming company, which started more than 50 years ago on S. Peoria Ave., donates five percent of its net annual profits to nonprofit organizations every year. And with as much traffic going in and out of these stores, you know that's got to be a hefty bag of cash. The list of beneficiaries is also a hefty one, ranging anywhere from the American Red Cross and the Tulsa Area Food Bank to Tulsa River Parks and the Tulsa Zoo. There doesn't seem to be any signs of QT slowing down on dishing out the goods, whether that's through donating money or creating those addictive taquitos.

Winner: Ihloff Salon and Day Spa
Well, this is a switch. Ihloff Salon and Day Spa doesn't automatically set off sirens and alarms when considering a green-friendly company in town, but they do have a commitment to sustainable practices. By partnering with Aveda, which boasts products and services that are plant-based and safe for the environment as well as the community, Ihloff has managed to uphold this standard as well as go above and beyond a bit by recycling waste used in their shops. As long as they're not trying to produce green hair styles, they'll be OK.

Catch the Price is Right or the Oprah Winfrey Show in the morning and afternoon. Watch for CSI, Survivor or The Amazing Race during primetime, or for a little late-night viewing, the David Letterman Show has been a long-time lovefest for night owls. Winner: 97.5FM, KMOD
We already know that the former "Rainbow Station," most famous for classic rock and an erstwhile DJ once known as Jeannie Summers, has an interesting new format. But news? Yep, the times they are a changin', and this rolling stone is not going to gather any moss. When Tulsa listeners want to hear the latest in what's going on locally and nationally, they don't have to change the dial. Once dominated by AM radio and stations such as KRMG (better luck next year, guys!), the KMOD staff not only plays the songs we want to hear but keeps us informed and on top of all the latest breaking news.

Biggest Ego
Winner: Mayor Dewey Bartlett, Jr.
Since becoming mayor, Dewey has become his own one-man show, supplying Tulsans with a sufficient amount of headlines and entertainment. But let's be fair -- he is one of the most powerful men in Tulsa, and after stepping into the office, one massive ego was bound to multiply. Plus, add in the other egomaniacs often found nearby such as sidekick Terry Simonson and the team of ego-heads, aka the City Council, Dewey's nemesis, and no one seems to want to leggo of their Eggo.

Winner: George Kaiser

Yeah, no kidding -- that's a pretty hefty goal, but so far George and the gang have put a dent in meeting that goal for many Tulsans. This past December alone, the GKFF donated $6.6 million to Tulsa-area social service agencies.

On April 8, Tulsans watched as the first pitch was thrown at downtown's brand spanking new $39 million ballpark. Now, a whole new generation is seeing downtown Tulsa as families head over to the field to grab a hot dog, grab a seat and maybe even grab a baseball. Winner: Tulsa Drillers' Game
To all you naysayers who didn't believe the city and its citizens should invest in a downtown ballpark for the Tulsa Drillers, we have one thing to say: Nana nana boo boo...
If we sound a little immature, it's because we were one of the first promoters of a downtown park -- and we've been spending so much time with our kids at the beautiful, accommodating, family-friendly ONEOK Field in the downtown Greenwood District.
For those who haven't been yet, all the things you loved about the old place -- the team, the beer, the hot peanuts -- are the same; but the 2010 version is even better. With the addition of two outfield lawns, a playground and more than a dozen food vendors, there's no place we'd rather be on a warm summer's evening than out to a ballgame.
And, we can't say enough about the civilized URBAN setting. Remember how you used to walk back to your car in a dust storm with the stench of barnyard all around?

Winner: Police Layoffs
Mayor Dewey Bartlett Jr.'s showdown with the local Fraternal Order of Police lodge over proposed salary and benefits concessions in January drew just about everybody's attention -- especially when officers refused to accept the mayor's proposal, ushering in the layoff of 124 Tulsa police officers because of the city's budget crunch. The use of a federal grant later allowed the city to hire 35 of those officers back, but for the rest of the fiscal year, Tulsa was forced to make do with a much smaller department.

Not only does the Tulsa GAS Project provide these girls with free after-school and summer art lessons, it also provides transportation to and from class, meals and, perhaps most importantly, a chance for the girls' to display and sell their work at monthly exhibitions.
While a portion of the paintings' receipts go back to the school to keep it operating, most goes into a bank account for the girls. That money is theirs to buy art supplies, visit the museum or even save for college.
And seriously, these girls have talent. That's something you -- and they -- might never have known had it not been for the GAS founders, Mona Pittinger and Matt Moffett.

Liquor Store for Beer
Winner: Parkhill Liquor & Wines
These Oklahoma liquor laws are a killer. Not only do you have to visit a liquor store to buy "real" beer, you have to buy it warm because the stores aren't allowed to keep six-point beer refrigerated. Nobody likes a warm beer. Regardless of how ridiculous the law might be, Parkhill does the best with what they have to work with -- in this case, just about any beer you could possibly want. Hooray, beer! Now, if only Parkhill would open a grocery store downtown, get the liquor laws changed so we could buy wine and real beer in their stores and they would be our ABoT entrepreneur.

You can either know everyone or keep to yourself and remain (fairly) anonymous, settle in at the bar, play shuffleboard, retire to the back room or escape to the small courtyard patio -- none of which you'd guess is there from the tiny storefront window. Add a little live music on weekends, and it's our readers' favorite place to hide away.
