Bombshell Beauty is Back

How to look like you deserve to

BY NICCI ATCHLEY

It could go either way, really. They're often both.

And while it's never considered passé to be glamorous and attractive, glamour is unapologetically flamboyant this season with hair and makeup trends to seduce the senses.

Bombshells most certainly come in many forms, but there is always the underlying trait of uber-femininity. With a few timely hair and makeup tips, every girl can channel her inner starlet for a fun night on the town with her leading man.

Bombshell Locks

There is one underlying characteristic of bombshell hair: There's got to be lots of it.

Stylist and glamour girl Candice Phillips offered up some tips on how to create traffic-stopping tresses from the comfort of your boudoir.

The bouffant is bigger than ever this fall. Although many variations have evolved over the ages, from Marie Antoinette to Amy Winehouse, the modern bouffant isn't your grandmother's beehive. The hairstyle has evolved to be a little bit messy and undone -- more Brigitte Bardot than Jackie O. In fact if you do it right, it will look like "next day hair," or as Phillips' mother affectionately refers to the look, "Last night's news."

Constructing the Bouffant

First, set your hair with hot rollers, old-school style. Let it cool, remove the rollers, and apply hair spray (Phillips has a few favorites: "Elnett" and "Big Sexy Hair Stay & Spray.") You'll want to brush out the curls with a thick bristle brush like the ones made by Mason Pearson -- or if you'd rather not spend $100 on a brush, Phillips recommends a $12 knockoff you can find on rickysnyc.com. After brushing, spray your hair again.

To keep hair extra big, Phillips suggests leaning over to the side, pulling your hair up so it's parallel to the floor and letting it fall, spraying continuously.

Another great way to create volume and save time is with dry shampoo. "I tell all my clients that dry shampoo is every girl's best friend," Phillips said. "It adds texture and volume and eliminates grease."

For even more oomph, artificial hair supplements have become fairly common. According to Phillips, every woman you see on the red carpet or runway has extra help from falls or woven-in extensions, and it's become the norm for the average woman to wear a piece on a weekend night out.

For affordable synthetic attachments, Phillips recommends Mid-K Beauty Supply and Sally Beauty Supply, each with three Tulsa locations. Your stylist can guide you to best type for your hair.

It isn't easy being glamorous. Don't say I'm not looking out for you.

With a Face like That, You Oughta Be in Pictures

As important as the hair on your head is the face said hair is framing. Perfectly timed to cater to this season's more decadent looks, MAC Cosmetics recently released a Marilyn Monroe makeup collection that is sure to have fashionistas and drag queens alike swarming the makeup counters from every corner of the developed earth.

According to Jennifer Thomason, retail manager for MAC Cosmetics at Saks Fifth Avenue, MAC decided to do this collection because "Marilyn really defined 20th century beauty. ... That Hollywood Glam never really goes out of style." As expected, the collection will feature bold red lipsticks and shimmery metallic shadows for creating that silver screen allure.

Miss Monroe was notorious for her meticulous attention to detail in her appearance and often spent hours primping before leaving the house. Unless you've nothing else to do all day, that kind of time commitment isn't realistic or even necessary. Thomason offered some tips for those who wish to create the bombshell face in a jiffy.

Miss Monroe was known for her flawless, dewey skin, so begin with a medium- to full-coverage cream foundation with a little powder.

Next, apply a light -- almost white -- shadow base to your eyelid. A soft reddish-brown shadow can be used to contour your eyelid crease.

Then to create the Monroe "bedroom eye" effect, apply false lashes or curl your lashes and apply volumizing mascara, finishing off the eye with a swoop of black liner. For a cat-eye effect, extend the line slightly beyond your lash line and swoop up. Then, for contrast, smudge a bit of dark brown eyeliner just underneath the lash, then apply white eyeliner on the inner rim.

To create the Marilyn heart-shaped face, contour your cheeks with a powder that is two shades darker than your natural skin tone. For lips, line your mouth with a pencil that matches your chosen shade of lipstick, then carefully fill in with pigment in either a bright or deep red.

The MAC Cosmetics Marilyn Monroe collection was debuted at a launch party hosted by yours truly at Saks Fifth Avenue, 1780 Utica Square, Oct. 4, where 10 percent of the stores proceeds that day were donated to Child Abuse Network. For more personalized instruction, you can book appointments at the MAC counters at both Saks and Dillard's. With just a little bit of guidance, you'll be ready for your closeup in no time.

Disappointed that this photographer has yet for the third time released photos to the urban tulsa without the models consent, permission or know how! He is also making profit off of images that were never signed over for use to release in the public eye for print. Those models, the hair and makeup artists never got recognition either in any of his submissions. There is seriously something wrong here and I think the Urban Tulsa should band all contact for further print work or images with this photographer from now on!
