Almost Back to 2006
Verizon, the largest wireless service provider in the U.S. since 2009, made waves with the Jan. 18 announcement of plans to create a financial services hub north of Tulsa and fill hundreds of finance and accounting positions.
The company will place the hub at Cherokee Industrial Park, located near U.S. Highway 75 and East 76th Street North.
According to the Tulsa Regional Chamber, the move will create 500 jobs. Currently, about 900 workers are at Verizon's operation in the park.
In 2006, the Tulsa World reported that the company had 1,600 workers at the industrial park, but that an unspecified number of layoffs would reduce the workforce as part of a national restructuring of the company.
Tulsa Regional Chamber President Mike Neal said in a written statement that the news of such a large number of jobs being added "is one of the most significant our community has seen in recent years."

Neal also noted that Verizon "is well positioned in the marketplace, and our community is fortunate that, among its many national locations, Tulsa was chosen for their vital financial services hub."
It was the second major economic announcement of the week. On Jan. 14, motor and pump manufacturer Borets-Weatherford announced plans to build a 15,000-square-foot research and development center in northeastern Oklahoma. The company has operations at 1600 N. Garnett Road.
