¡ASK A MEXICAN!

Dear Mexican: I am a lifelong resident of Arizona and have worked side by side with illegals for 25 years as a bloquero. In all that time, I never knew ONE of them to be an aspiring American. In fact, their loyalties remain with their home states, they listen to mariachi and cumbia, and their trucks sport lots of Mexican flag bumper stickers. Most of all, they have kept our wages below the national average--just ask any construction worker. That's supposed to be okay? Because they work dirt-cheap with no benefits? Wouldn't opening the borders be a further reduction in quality of life for us American citizens who work beside these vatos? If I want to live in the Third World, I'll move to Mexico.

-- Tucson Timmy

Dear Gabacho: Y'know, that's been the same argument used against immigrant laborers since Samuel Gompers was agitating to keep "Mongolians" from reaching our Pacific shores and railing about hordes of southeast Europeans destroying the gains that his American Federation of Labor made for the American working man. "The workers of America have felt most keenly the pernicious results of the establishment of foreign standards of work, wages and conduct in American industries and commerce," the union pioneer wrote in a 1916 issue of the American Federationist. "Foreign standards of wages do not permit American standards of life. Foreign labor has driven American workers out of many trades, callings, and communities, and the influence of those lower standards has permeated widely"--wait a minute, how did Glenn Beck manage to sneak himself back in time? The great irony, of course, is that immigrant labor is the most-bountiful spigot in the modern-day labor movement, and always has been. Simply put, Timmy: American workers need cheap labor, legal or not, to spur them into class consciousness and better their lot--or do you think Old Man Rockefeller simply allowed the eight-hour work day to happen out of the goodness of his raisin heart? Oh, and your concerns about your unassimilated colleagues? Again, Gompers: "Of course the children of immigrants go to school, and after a few years they become Americanized. But how about the grown-up persons, the adults? Who makes an effort to Americanize them? The labor organization." Instead of whining about non-assimilating illegals, maybe you should help them become Americans? If you don't, then you have no right to chillar.

Dear Mexican: Why do Mexicans seem to always have four different ATM cards and have to use each and every one of them when visiting the machine despite the fact that there are seven people backed up in line behind them?

-- All the Merrier

Dear ATM: Just getting ready for the weekend, amigo! One fund to feed the family, otra, to wire money back to the motherland, a couple bucks for booze, and the largest pot to use for padrino purposes at multiple weddings, baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations and quinceañera--pinche fecund Mexican loins...

Dear Mexican: I tried to find an article search on the word paisano or paisa. I heard conflicting definitions from two different Mexican coworkers that the word means "homeboy" or "wetback." I was wondering if this is the equivalent to the n-word for Latinos?

-- Thinking out Loud

Dear Gabacho: The n-word...you mean naco? Paisano literally means "countryman," but has a secondary definition referring to country folk (both paisano and peasant ultimately share the same etymological madre: the Latin pagus, country or rural district). Combine the two meanings, and you have a synonym for "buddy," as one of your coworkers accurately noted. But bigmouths long ago warped the rural sentido to turn it into paisa, slang for a wab--in other words, a paisa is a Mexican redneck, a FOB...a wab! Does it carry the same weight as nigger? No, that would be gabacho--but don't tell gabachos that!

An aspiring American? How about the Billions in health care costs alone that this sorry bunch costs AMERICAN taxpayers annually. You want to know why health care costs so much. Go to one of the larger border towns and watch the birthing mothers come running into the Hospital ER's with their child half born. That's just the billions spent in medical expense. What about the prosecution and jailing of the hundreds of thousands of Illegals annually?

I say build a wall, put armed guards on it and shoot them when they try to climb it. If they really want to be American citizens, let them go about it legally. Why pay a Coyote to smuggle you in when you can walk up to the border, state I would like to become a US Citizen and do it legally?

We won't even get into the hundreds of millions of dollars NOT PAID IN INCOME TAX annually by the illegals.

Believe me folks, it starts to add up and why there are those of you who will tolerate these illegals, well, it's just beyond my comprehension. I know Jesus said turn the other cheek, but when that sucker is bleeding from the ripping off the biggest part of it, it's time to deliver the knock out punch.

I HAD BEEN WORKING CONSTRUCTION FOR TEN YEARS AND HAVE SEEN THE WAGES AND PRICES PER HOW YOU CHARGE DROP 50 PERCENT. IS THIS ETHICAL, WHY IS IT WAGES TEN YEARS AGO WERE MORE, AND AMERCIANS NEVER HAD TO COMPETE THIS LOW FOR A JOB AND BECAUSE THE CLIENT DOESNT KNOW MUCH ABOUT CONSTRUCTION THE HOME OWNER IS GETTING SCREWED B/C NOTHING IS BEING DONE RIGHT AND THEY DONT KNOW BETTER, SHOULD THE CONTRACTOR BE ABLE TO CHARGE MORE B/C GAS, FOOD AND INSURANCE IS MORE AND NOW MAYBE TAXES. UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS HAVE NONE OF THE OVERHEAD LIKE THE AMERCIANS DO AND THE UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS GET FEDERAL AND STATE HELP THATS HOW THE CHEAP LABOR FORCE IS ABLE TO WORK CHEAP. OTHER AMERICANS TAXES PAY FOR THE REST. MY ELDER FAMILY MEBERS GOT 10 DOLLARS AN HOUR IN 1979. AND IN 1989 YOU GOT 13 -15 TO 1996 AND BEFORE THE MEXICAN INVASION WE WHERE GETTING 20 AN HOUR AND NOW ITS BACK DOWN TO 10 - 12 HOUR. THIS IS CRAZY. I WELCOME THE MEXICANS BUT THEY DONT WELCOME ME. THEY DISOBEY THE LAW, 70 PERCENT OF THEM DO SHODDY WORK DUE TO CHEAP PRICES(LESS TIME TO THINK WHEN YOUR PAID LESS PER JOB AND LESS TIME FOR DETAIL). ITS LEAVING THE PROS OUT IN THE DUST GETTING DIFFERENT JOBS AND LEAVING AMERCICA WITH MEXICANS AND NOW GETTING CROOKED WALLS, SHEETROCK FALLING OF THE STUDS, UNEVEN, UNLEVELED,AND UNPLUMED WORK., I WATCHED WHILE I WAS BRICKING A CONDO AND SEEN THAT THE WHOLE TIME THE MEXCIANS DID NOT USE A LEVEL ONCE ON THE FRAMING. I ADMIT THEY WILL GET BETTER BUT DAMN HOW MANY HOMES AND BUILDING WILL THEY DO WRONG BEFORE THEY DO. WE ALL MUST GO THROUGH THE JOUNEYMANSHIP AND BUILD ARE WAY UP. ITS LIKE GOING TO COLLEGE, CONSTRUCTION IS A TRADE AND A HUGE PART OF OUR CULTURE.. GET THE UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS OUT OF AMERICA PLEASE. I HAD TO GET A SECOND JOB, B/C I WILL NOT AND CANNOT NOT AND NOT ABLE TO WORK AT THERE LEVEL OF PAY WITH ALL OF THE OVERHEAD THAT IS REQUIRED BY ME TO PAY TO WORK IN AMERICA... BOTTOM LINE IS .. HOW ARE AMERICANS ABLE TO COMPETE WITH MEXICANS WHEN WE HAVE TO HAVE ALL OF THE INSURANCE, PAY TAXES, SOME OF US HAVE TO HAVE BIG TRUCKS TO PULL EQUIPMENT THAT IS COSTLY AND THE MAINTANCE ON EQUIPMENT THAT IS COSTLY, HOW ARE WE ABLE TO PAY SOMEONE 15 AN HOUR WHOM NEEDS IT TO PROVIDE FOR THERE FAMILY WHEN A MEXICAN HAS GOV HELP AND IS PAYED 8 DOLLARS AN HOUR WE HAVE TO COMPETE WITH THAT 8 BUCKS AN HOUR WHEN ITS SUPPOSED TO BE NEAR 20 AN HOUR.(BY EXAMPLE FROM THE WORK I DO). WE AMERICAN LIKE TO LIVE WITH ONLY ARE FAMILY OF A MOTHER AND OR FATHER AND KIDS IN A HOUSE WITH A MORTGAGE THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IN THE PAST 8 YEARS WE CANT AFFORD TO B/C THE 5 MEXICANS WHO LIVE IN A ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT DECIDES THEY CAN AFFORD IT B/C THEY SAHRE ONE CAR AND ONE APARTMENT AND IS ABLE TO WORK CHEAP B/C THEY LIVE UNAMERICAN. HOW IS THAT ETHICAL THE LANDLORD WILL BE MORE HAPPY WITH SELLING EACH PERSON ONE APARTMENT TO EACH PERSON INSTEAD 5 PEOPLE IN ONE, THE LANDLORD COULD BE RENTING OUT 5 INSTEAD OF 1 ALSO THE SAME WITH A CAR AND YOU KNOW THEY DONT CARRY CAR INSURACNE. I KNOW SO MANY PEOPLE INCLUDING MYSELF THAT HAS BEEN HIT BY AN ILLGAL AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT MYSELF. THIS IS A MESS THATS WHY WE HAVE TO CLEAN THIS MESS UP AND GRANTING AMNESTY IS THE WRONG WAY OF DOING THIS. GO BACK AND GO THROUGH THE SYSTEM OBEY THE LAW WE HAVE TO DAMNIT..
