Still Boycotting the BCS

Remember the good Steven Seagal movie when Tommy Lee Jones' character declared the movement was dead. Then he went on to proclaim the revolution was underway. He had established his heinousness so anything moving forward had traction.

However, boycotting the BCS failed to gain steam. Much like Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy, we started trumpeting our horn a bit late in the game.

Timing is everything, so here is the new game plan. Let's boycott the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl. Neither sponsor was mentioned just now so we are already winning. It will not be difficult to skip watching the West Virginia versus Clemson and Michigan versus Virginia Tech games.

Congratulations are in order for the Heisman Trophy voters. Yes, we should acknowledge voters for awarding Robert Griffin III with the semi-meaningless bronze statue.

The fact that RG III might be the worst recipient of the award since Troy Smith is irrelevant. He was the most deserving this year and astute voters got it right.

Perhaps those same voters can make the BCS selection decision in the future. It is obvious the current crop of responsible BCS selectors is a cadre of clueless clowns.

On a more local note, can you believe the winning taking place in T-Town? Both featured teams in last week's cover story are kickin' rear and taking names.

The 66ers lost Head Coach Nate Tibbett but kept chugging along. Tibbett is now a bench coach with the NBA's Cleveland Cavilers. It harkens back to the days when college programs would pluck Golden Hurricane coaches. This is not a bad thing.

His replacement, Dale Osbourne, took over after serving as an assistant coach for two-plus seasons. So far the transition appears to be seamless.

"Our goals are to help develop and grow not only our players, but also our coaches and front office staff members, so we are very happy that Nate has the opportunity to continue his career with this step to an NBA bench," said Paul Rivers, Thunder director of minor league operations and basketball technology. "We appreciate Nate's efforts with the 66ers and are confident that Dale will step in and continue to build on the foundation in place with the 66ers."

The majority of their games have been roadies to open the season. The home schedule heats up and the D-League West Division second-place team (at this time) could use the added advantage.

Marcus Lewis and Jerome Dyson provide the team with a nice inside-out punch. Lewis is averaging almost 13 rebounds per contest while Dyson is just shy of 20 points per game.

Meanwhile the Oilers continue to surge. They hold a winning record but are in a dogfight of a division with several teams competing at a high level.

After 21 games they find themselves just six points out of first place but also just five points out of second to last in the Berry Division.

Forward Dylan Clark leads the team in points and is tied for eighth in the Central Hockey League. He is complemented by Michel Beausoleil, whose 22 points trail Clark by just 3 for the team league.

The Oilers lead the league in goals. They also have given up more goals than all but two teams in the league. It is safe to say this is not the style Head Coach Bruce Ramsay hopes to take into the playoffs. But for now it makes for an exciting brand of hockey for sure.

Don't forget about Winterfest. The outdoor spectacular next to the BOK Center was a huge success last year. Walking by the event this year conjures up just one minor complaint.

There is no doubt -- Tulsans know of the event. Most who have attended praise the fun to be had. However, it is not the most inviting for street walkers. And by street walkers we're referring to innocent walkers-by and not ladies of the night.

Should we even mention what is happening in college basketball in our state? If we bring it up, will we jinx the progress?

We have two teams playing solid basketball. Both have that feeling. What are the odds that Oral Roberts and OU would be leading the state's chances for legitimate postseason basketball play?

It is amazing what a competent coach can do for your team. Lon Kruger will never be confused with Mike Krzyzewski or Bob Knight. But he will also never be confused with Jeff Capel. His basketball IQ and competence are making a difference, if anyone cares.

Of course, Scott Sutton continues to push the right buttons for the Golden Eagles. The balanced attack of Sutton's squad features four scorers averaging double digits led by Dominique Morrison.

Let's all ask Santa for a dose of March Madness. If he delivers, great. If not, we'll have forgotten all about our wish come March anyway.
