You, dear Urban Tulsa Weekly readers, have spoken powerfully with your votes. The campaign for ABoT -- fiercely beautiful for all its intensity -- is conclusive. Ballots counted, the results shout for attention. This truly is the Absolute Best of Tulsa.
Dining, Shopping, Music, Drinks, Arts, Personages, running the gamut of creative loafing all around the Metro.
Nothing is missing.
Voter turnout was the highest in recorded history. The analysis is clear: Our readers demand the best possible quality of life around them. These Winners and Favorites you'll see below are members of an ever-growing family of Urban Tulsans. Pulling together, even in these so-called tough times, we have created our own economy of scale called Tulsa.
  Gavin Elliott |
Sifting this fine mix is an arduous process that began in May with your nomination ballots -- Millions, gazillions, hundreds of thousands, tens of thousands of them.
Each of the physical ballots, as well as each of the online entries, was recorded and checked by hand, then put through two stages of runoffs -- again counted by our cadre of interns and volunteers through late nights and lots of delivered pizza.
Thank Heaven for Interns & Friends
We could have done it without them, but it's a lot more fun having interns. They get it; they give it; and we teach them the real world of journalism. We are inspired by their desire to learn and we are re-ignited by the passion with which they approach UTW's Herculean requirements.
These are the individuals who counted your ballots.
Leah Campbell, Elizabeth Éclair Carlson, Ramon Carrasco, Liz Daniels, Maureen Dunbar, Aaron Hall, Carol Hall, Darby Harmon, Taylr Janak, Keely Kirby, Andrew Lechner, Anna Neal, Michael Nesser, Jack "Harrison" Winn, Shannon Whinnery
Interns:
Chelsea Boen, Graphic Design, ORU, Madison Faulkner, Creative Writing, Missouri State, Sean Higgins, Graphic Design, OSU, Andrea Mayes, Jenks High School, Cara Ann Rob, Strategic Communications, OSU, Erica Stefanek, Strategic Communications and Advertising, OSU, Dylan Spaulding, Digital Media, TCC , May West, Public Relations, ECO
Some of these individuals were responsible for collecting information and writing about our winners. Several of them have been profiled in these pages. (See "Meet Our Interns" feature each week).
What is remarkable to us, having been at the business of running your ever-loving alt these many years, is this new breed of interns. They read. They write. They seek and find info about Tulsa that only UTW readers can get. They love the printed page. They are the future.
Without Further Ado
Okay, you've got the picture. This is one, big, whoopin' event. ABoT is everything that's dear to the creative class in Metro Tulsa. Young, old, big income, little income, shiny, happy people who have kept their religion and put their hands on The Paper each week to find the pulse of the city.
These are your favorites. What it means is bragging rights each and every week for the whole year.
Some winners repeat; many are surprises. But everybody in this issue is a winner when the cheering is over.
Next week, we'll have a new Issue. You'll see even more winners. Nothing will ever get back to normal once you are introduced to The Absolute Best of Tulsa!

Public Servant
Blake Ewing
Aside from pissing off some local hipsters, Blake Ewing has been pretty popular in the area; at least popular enough to earn your vote as this year's top public servant. Once better known for his restaurants, the Dist. 4 Councilor sits semi-comfy in his position at city hall. Ewing isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, whether it be coddling fussy hipsters or going toe-to-toe against those with whom he respectfully disagrees. But we like to think that the real reason you chose him above the rest is the pure and simple fact that the man refused to shave his beard for the election.

Grocery Store
Reasor's Foods
This opportunistic grocery was founded in 1963 in Tahlequah, by Larry Reasor who was famous for his personalized, down-to-earth tv commercials. Their business is based on the fundamental idea: Sell the customers what they want to buy. Now, with 17 locations in Green Country, it has filled the void left by national paper and plastic baggers. If the outfit continues focusing on customers and choice produce, maybe, with the passage of the wine and strong beer initiative this fall, our choice of produce can only get better with "the right stuff, the right price."
Other Favorites: Whole Foods Market, Petty's Fine Foods

Best Thing to Happen This Year
Nude:8
Sex sells. This is an idea that Tulsans have embraced, voting Daniel Gulick's Nude 8 as the ABoT thing to happen this year. The erotic art show celebrated the salacious and risqué once again with its art that elevated the taboo and raised eyebrows.
Improvement to Tulsa
Road Construction
Ah, the love/hate relationship that all of us have with the road construction in Tulsa. We love that it's happening but we also hate that it's happening. Commutes to work are turned into an off-roading adventure and you're lucky if you don't blow a tire driving over a pot-hole but we give thanks for the improvements that we know are sure to come. Patience is a virtue, friends.
Misuse of Tax Dollars
It's no secret that tax payers often question where their money is going and this year Tulsa tax payers have pin-pointed street construction as the ABoT misuse of tax dollars. You work hard for your money and you want to see it put to good use; especially the money you don't get to keep. You all would rather spend money on the kind of bridge work that exists in your mouth, not on the roads.
Most Wanted Attractions
Amusement Park
Someone write congress a letter, already! Tulsans want an amusement park and they want it now! Once again, an amusement park is the most wanted attraction for T-Town.
News Story of the year
Tower Guy
Everyone loves a good spectacle, which is probably why you all think that the absolute best news story of 2012 is the Tower Guy from the Clear Channel communications tower. Back in August, this guy scaled 100 feet of the tower and remained in position for the city's longest standoff on record--more than 120 hours. Whether it was the mystery of why he climbed in the first place, or the fact that you felt a kinship with him for craving Whataburger and Oreo's, you all loved every minute of his nearly working week perch.
Reasons to Grab a
Pint During the Day
Construction/Traffic
They don't call it road rage for nothing, people. Traffic and construction are, hands down, the best reasons to grab a pint during the day. There isn't anything out there that can calm down an angry driver quite like a tall cold one. Well, nothing that we could have you legally admit to.
Views of Around Tulsa
Mayo Rooftop
It could be argued that there isn't a bad view of Tulsa. By the same token, it could be argued that there is a best view of Tulsa, or rather, an ABoT view of Tulsa. This year, the view from the Mayo Rooftop is your favorite to dazzle the eye as you scan all that Tulsa beholds.
