The other night my little girl wanted ice cream. We were out. She said she really only wanted to eat something with sprinkles on it and wasn't too worried about the actual ice cream.

We whipped up some vanilla pudding and gave her the container of sprinkles. Would the ice cream covered with sprinkles have tasted better than pudding with sprinkles? Maybe, but she didn't seem to mind. She was satisfied.

What does this have to do with sports? Glad you asked. I decided to move past the mixed martial arts talk and give you a change of pace. Then Saturday night happened.

I feel Tulsa needs an expert to cover the sport fulltime. Local fight fans deserve it. The verdict? I'll sprinkle a variety of local sports topics then pound away with my MMA thoughts of the week. You'll be satisfied.

The Tulsa 66ers are hosting auditions for the 2009-10 66ers Dance Team on Saturday, August 29. The Mabee Gym on the University of Tulsa campus is the location.

"The ladies on our squad will play a big role in our team's community outreach efforts, entertain at all of our home games, and possibly have an advantage if they want to try out next year for the Oklahoma City Thunder Girls."

On a Boat

The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors program announced a 7th and 8th grade gROWth program. This is a great idea for two types of kids: The lazy group and the active group.

Lazy kids may find interest in competing outdoors while remaining on their rear ends. Kind of like a sneaky way to get them to exercise. Active kids may want a variety in life.

"We are excited to offer this program to middle school students. Rowing is a unique sport and offers a great deal to people of all ages. I am confident that Coach Miller will bring her enthusiasm for the sport and run a great rowing program for middle school students in the Tulsa area," said TRC Juniors Head Coach Neil Bergenroth.

A quick and dirty breakdown of MMA this past weekend. Instead of labeling each with mundane monikers like "Good and Bad" or "Pros and Cons" I'm going with "Silva and Griffin." If you decide to read the next section, you'll know what that means.

Silva -- Great crowd for the FCF card this past Saturday night. It was impressive for two reasons. A) No announced superstar guest appearance but fight fans still turned out in droves. B) It went up against UFC 101 and still drew a nice crowd.

Griffin -- The loud drunk gal sitting behind me. If she didn't get into a fight later in the evening, it was only because she passed out.

Silva -- Exciting fights all night. It's weird because people love watching lightweight guys scrap. However, there is something about two skilled light heavyweights battling in the center of the cage. There were three such battles on the evening.

Griffin -- An amateur fighter who shall remain nameless won his fight. It was the second time I've seen him in the cage. Each time he was awarded a purse or duffle bag for being the best amateur on the card.

I kept thinking to myself he should turn pro, he's wasting his time. Then the main event started. Wayne Cole came close to catching Dave Heath in an armbar.

The kid sitting next to me started yelling "break his arm." Then it dawned on me. This is why he's still an amateur. He has no clue about the respect fighters should show one another. Unless Heath pee'd in the kid's cereal, the calls for a broken arm were... well... amateurish.

Silva -- Former OU quarterback/receiver Paul Thompson was sitting on the other side of me. I couldn't tell if Thompson wanted to be noticed or tried to stay low key. Either way, he seemed to really enjoy the festivities, as did everyone on hand.

Griffin -- Wayne Cole knee'd Dave Heath in the head while he was on the matt. That is illegal and referee Tom Jones was quick to step in. Heath, however, showed a lack of poise in retaliating with a left over the top of the ref. Both were admonished for the boorish behavior and a point was taken from each.

Heath knocked out Cole in the second so the point deduction was irrelevant. It brings up an interesting dilemma.

Last week Heath spoke with me about getting the Oklahoma Boxing Commission's blessing to ref fights. Joe Miller from the OBC responded to me saying it was a conflict of interest for a fighter to ref a card since he was an active fighter.

After this weekend I see both sides more clearly. On one hand, I thought Jones did a masterful job throughout the evening. No bad stoppages and no unnecessary damage to any fighter. He did not let his friendship get in the way of deducting a point from Heath.

On the other hand, will all fighters have the integrity of Jones? Can the OBC trust that each fighter moonlighting as a ref be on "the level?"

Out!
