Filling the Gap. Morton Comprehensive Health Services announced that it received a federal grant to provide health care enrollment for children. Morton is one of 39 agencies and the only agency in Oklahoma to receive funding from the government.
The $388,190 grant will help Morton "to reach out to populations of children with gaps in coverage and to enroll them in health care programs," according to John M. Silva, CEO of Morton.
The state's largest federally qualified health center, Morton will target schools, apartment complexes, day care programs, churches, and community events to identify families in need of screening services and health care coverage.
In partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Morton's goal is to reduce the number of uninsured children in its service delivery area and enroll children into the programs that will provide them with health insurance coverage.
According to the Census Bureau, in 2009, nearly 8.3 million children nationally were without health insurance. In Oklahoma, 117,126 children were uninsured. In Morton's service delivery area in Tulsa and Nowata, it is reported that more than 6,000 children are in need of health insurance coverage.
Morton Comprehensive Health Services, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, is the largest community health center in the state. Visit mortonhealth.org for more information.
