POSTED ON FEBRUARY 22, 2012:
Happy 80th Birthday, Buck!
Tulsa's oldest bar, The Buckaneer, is city's hippest octogenarian
Tucked into a quiet corner of midtown on Harvard Ave. is a popular little dive bar with cheap drinks and a cast of T-Town characters and regulars. Opened in 1932, the Buckaneer Bar is Tulsa's oldest juke joint.
Patience "PJ" Nunn, one of Tulsa's most popular bartenders, has been the Buck's general manager for eight years. She also slings a mean drink. The bar has changed hands a few times in its run, but the same two owners, Bob Williams and Don Gendron, have maintained the Buck for the past 12 years.
Nunn fosters the bar's casual, low-key atmosphere. "It's very comfortable," Nunn said. "It's one of the places you could go by yourself and not feel uncomfortable. If you sit down with somebody you don't know they're going to start talking and make you feel welcome."
The bar was located on Cherry St., according to the Buck's long-time regular Mike Bear. He said he hung out at the Buck in the 1950s on Cherry St., then moved with it to its current home at 1120 S. Harvard Ave.
In the eight years she's served up pints and cocktails, Nunn said her regulars "sit around and play farkle and dominoes." But this weekend will be a little out of the ordinary.
To celebrate the Buck's big 80th birthday, they've lined up a whole slew of fun festivities. Beginning on Thurs., Feb. 23, the Buck will be selling $3 shots for a week. Also on Thursday, grab some friends and join in the merriment with a Skyy Vodka promotion from 9-11pm, a fire pit giveaway, and .80-cent longnecks from 7-7:32pm (yes, you read that right--a 32-minute special).
On Fri., Feb. 24, the bar will feature a Miller High Life promotion between 8-10pm, a cooler giveaway, the Jager Girls who will host a Jager Fridge giveaway at midnight and $3 Jager shots (also all week), and a qualifying beer pong tourney at 11pm.
On Sat., Feb. 25, dress up in clothes from your favorite decade and compete to win $100 in the Buck's best-dressed contest. The bar will continue their $3 shot specials, and will feature a Budweiser vintage promotion and Bud Neon giveaway between 8-11pm; they'll also offer up .80-cent longnecks at 9pm and hold a Crown Royal promotion from 7-10pm.
On Sun., Feb. 26, it's time to recover from the raucous weekend with the Buck's Ketel One "Recovery Bloody Mary."

If you decide to check out the Buck for the first time this weekend, Nunn wants you to know, "You're always going to have an exceptionally nice bartender. My girls are beautiful and the sweetest people on earth. And our specials every day are great."
