After last week's music marathon that was Free Tulsa and bearing the heat, we can't blame you if you're more inclined to stay in and relax this weekend. This is Tulsa, though, and you know that the music doesn't stop. Granted, the schedule seems a little sparse after the hurricane of band that hit the Blue Dome District last weekend, but we've still got a few highlights worth checking out so you can get your music fix this week. Thursday, August 2 After a period of silence that included kids and studio time, Tony Romanello & the Black Jackets re-emerge from their semi-sabbatical for a show at The Colony with Difuser. Show up ready for some big guitars, though, because this won't be your normal Colony gig. Romanello and his crew have been quiet for far too long, so this will be a good night to get loud. Friday, August 3 This is a great night for Red Dirt and Texas country fans, especially if you're downtown. The bigger show is undoubtedly Stoney LaRue at Cain's Ballroom and you'll want to arrive early to get a good dose of Chad Sullins & the Last Call Coalition. If you're looking for something slightly different, Willie Stadlin plays just down the street at The Vanguard with Brandon Clark Band opening the show. Also on Friday, Red Dirt holds court at The Colony and Paul Benjaman Band shares the Fassler Hall stage with Panda Resistance. Saturday, August 4 The Texas vibe carries over for a second night at The Vanguard with Shy Blakeman headlining and South 40 (in an all too rare Tulsa appearance) opening the show. Elsewhere around town, Mercury Lounge gets funky with Freakjuice and The Colony gets live and loud with Steve Pryor. Also on the books, you can get your jazz fix at the Doubletree Warren Place with Eldredge Jackson and Tom Braxton sharing the bill for a night "2 Much Sax." Meanwhile, the dance crowd will be at IDL Ballroom for Beatatuce and a night of House/Mambton/Electro. Sunday, August 5 If you're up for an early set of tunes, you need to be at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame at 5pm for this week's installment in the Summer Concert series with Stephen Schrag and Barron Ryan, the past two winners of the Oklahoma Young Artists Piano Competition (Schrag is the 2012 winner and Ryan won in 2011). Both will be doing a 10 day tour of Israel as cultural ambassadors for Oklahoma and this is effectively a warm up show and send off party for a couple of the state's best jazz pianists. Tuesday, August 7 MusicLynx Network celebrates its one year anniversary with a show at Hunt Club with Hammer Down, Stephen Speaks and FM Pilots, beginning at 7pm. Wednesday, August 8 Possibly the biggest shows of the hits Tulsa on Wednesday evening. For the dance crowd, Doctor P makes a house call at Cain's Ballroom with Schoolboy and DJ Falkirk opening the evening. The classic rock audience is well represented too, however, as Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks co-headline the "Heart & Soul Tour" as it stops at BOK Center to wrap up the week.
