Tee 'Em High and Let 'Em Fly
Ranking Tulsa's best public golf courses
One thing about golf: It's expensive.
Aside from a good set of clubs that can run in the neighborhood of a grand, adding balls, tees, bag, shoes and attire into the mix can easily break one's bank quicker than a bad round can break a novice golfer's ambition.
And that's before shelling out the cash to actually play the game. Greens fees can run up to $100, and without knowing the course, what's a relaxing mid-day activity can soon become a costly mistake.
There are literally a dozen or so public courses in the Tulsa area, so which ones are most worth your money?
3. South Lakes Golf Course
One of the better-kept secrets in the Tulsa golf community, South Lakes Golf Course in Jenks provides one of the more pleasing experiences in town.
Though it's an easier course, it's a wonderful experience for everyone. With a top-notch pro shop, grill and practice facilities, it's easy to overlook the best feature South Lakes has to offer: the impeccable condition of the course.
No matter the season, South Lakes provides some of the softest fairways and best-kept greens in all of Tulsa, and while it provides plenty of hazards, it's rather difficult to find yourself in an inescapable predicament.
At $36 (including cart), this is a virtual steal.
2. Emerald Falls Golf Club
There's nothing in Tulsa quite like Emerald Falls Golf Club. Play just a few holes, and you'll feel like you're at a vacation resort.
Emerald Falls offers a great mix of forestry and water, and its unique Zorro Zoysia fairways and landscaping make for a breathtaking golf experience. With a full-service restaurant and banquet facilities, Emerald Falls has a country club feel without the inflated membership fees.
It's also one of the most difficult in the Tulsa area. Wild grasses, rolling hills, and trees come into play, and players can easily get themselves into trouble.
Average rates at Emerald Falls -- located near Kenosha Ave. and 305th E. Avenue -- are around $50, but deals can often be found either online or by calling the clubhouse directly.
Emerald Falls is in Broken Arrow.
1. Forest Ridge Golf Course
There's simply no nicer course in the Tulsa area than the one located off Kenosha Avenue east of the Creek Turnpike.
Everything about Forest Ridge oozes golf tradition. After just a few holes, players will feel as if they're in the midst of a PGA major event.
Forest Ridge offers one of the best pro shops of all local public courses, GPS-equipped golf carts, a full-service restaurant and bar, and top-notch banquet facilities.
No public course in Tulsa comes as close to providing a true country club experience than Forest Ridge, and its average rate of $60 (cart included), is worth every penny.
By the time players make their approach to the ninth green and notice the club's Glass Veranda banquet hall, they'll swear they're at Southern Hills.
