Re: The Few. The Proud.  1/14/2009 - 1:22pm
Keep your eye, Josh. You're doing exactly what has been done to David Cook since he's been in the public eye... demanding that he conform to an incredible standard. A lesser man would crumble under the pressure.

The rest of us will continue to enjoy him for who he is and what he does... exactly how he does it.

Re: You Heard it First  1/ 7/2009 - 10:47am
Great article... I love these local music scene reviews. It was great to see mention of the reason why this non-Tulsa girl is even here checking out your scene: MWK and To Have Heroes.

... so, there may be more to Luna Despierta? hmmm.... I can't wait! That EP is haunting.

Re: Flat on his Artistic Face  1/ 1/2009 - 3:22am
David Cook's eponymous album is a great piece of art and an enjoyable listen. Paucity of funds is not a prerequisite for artistic integrity. Cook has suceeded in making great music both with and without budgetary constraints.

Analog Heart, his first solo, indie-produced album was recorded on a shoe-string budget... Cook has even marveled that the $2000 that original hard copies have sold for on ebay are twice what the record cost him to make (not sold by him). Like Mr. Kline pointed out, it was celebrated in Tulsa, winning Cook an URBY for Indie Album of the Year in 2006. Here are the CD scans for Analog Heart: http://www.david-cook.org/Analog-Heart-Scans-t7237.html

Now, with his first major record release, Cook has given us another album full of anthemic tracks which sound great on the record, but just wait to you hear them live (I have had the opportunity to see David perform some of these songs at an acoustic show recently). The man's got heart... and this scathing review will never diminish that. The main complaint I get from this review is that the new album isn't "real" enough for Mr. Kline. I challenge Mr. Kline to find a more real, raw song than Permanent... a song that Cook penned in a matter of minutes, just putting his thoughts to paper and recorded in only two takes.

What I do see is an ambitious musician who took an opportunity to get his music heard... even if said opportunity was a cheesy TV show. It's not, as Mr. Kline snidely says, about the money. He has spent the last decade trying to "make it". Cook's fans KNOW that he's an adopted son of Tulsa... we didn't need American Idol to tell us, we sought it out... just like we sought out Cook's pre-Idol music (this is the internet/DYI age, afterall). Malign the show to your heart's content, there's no denying that Idol alumni permeate today's popular music: Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis (who came to us courtesy of Pop Idol), and now David Archuleta and David Cook.

Besides, as a non-Tulsa girl I'm very happy that Cook went on Idol... he couldn't stay Tulsa's little secret forever. Every new artist signed to a major label has joined the ranks of the "peasant begging for leftovers from the fat cat czars lording over Top 40 Kingdom"... that's the way the business is set up... and it SUCKS. What is sad is that instead of giving Cook's album a review, Mr. Klein took this opportunity to rant against the music industry and vent his frustrations about Idol and Chris Cornell.

No biggie, the album still rocks.
