Re: Taxi Scam Over?  1/19/2009 - 4:43pm
Unfortunately the city council and the airport seem to think that more regulation is going to fix the taxi problem in Tulsa. It isn’t.

The problem isn’t in the fee structure, but in the city, certificate holder, and airports inability and or unwillingness to enforce the city ordinances as they pertain to the taxi industry.

I know there are a lot of taxi drivers who after the yearly inspections, change there meters, and I know there are a lot of drivers who don’t even turn there meters on, they just tell the customer what ever price they want, and if the customer complains, the taxi driver threatens the customer with calling the police. Rather than mess with all that the customer just pays it and gets out.

In this article they mention changing the fairs, and mention needing more cabs on the street. Changing the fairs is not going to get more taxis on the street, if anything it is going to make fewer taxis available, as a lot of us are barely making it now.

As a taxi driver I know there are a lot of dishonest cab drivers out there, but all this is going to do is make it less profitable to be a taxi driver. The price of gas isn’t going to stay down long, and at three dollars or more per gallon, it won’t take long to put a lot of taxi drivers out of business.

The solution is simple, enforce the city ordinances, make the city, certificate holders and airport responsible for doing there job, enforcing the rates.

The next time a taxi driver gives an outrageous price, let them call the police. My bet is they won’t, and will take a more reasonable price for the ride.
