I don't defend Rose, for the simple reason his offense has potentially disastrous ramifications on the integrity of the game. Attempting to gain an edge is one thing; potentially influencing the outcome of games for one's personal gain is another. While steroid era players' behavior isn't exactly admirable, there's no denying their accomplishments. If playing at such high levels was truly an easy task with the aid of steroids, these accomplishments would be matched multiple times over. Baseball had been a game without any sort of testing until the early 2000s. By now, there are surely multiple hall of fame inductees who'd dabbled in PEDs or, at least, fit the mold (Rickey Henderson).
