Susan Coman, 3/ 9/2012 - 9:48am "I've been fighting to get westside neighborhoods cleaned up for more than a year. Unkept homes invite crime in neighborhoods, lower property values, and encourage others around the eyesores to not keep their homes up either.
We have solicited volunteers to help poor homeowners mow and maintain their property and have helped several people with mowing. We've worked with the City's Working in Neighborhoods department to provide dumpsters and bulk pick ups. There are many things that individuals can do to help in situations like this. It is not our responsibility as taxpayers, nor the City's, to maintain privately-held properties without reimbursements.
I feel sorry for this woman, but perhaps she should not own a home that she can't afford to maintain. If the city merely allows people to leave eyesores unkept -- every property owner suffers."
