"Who needs terrorists?
We have the Congress of the United States.
How do you push someone to the edge, and get them to consider hurting themselves or others? Take away their hope and safety. Ask Black Americans, who are still living with such an enduring legacy. Now before Congress, we have pushes for bills to ensure that everyone who has been "adjudicated mentally incompetent" will end up along with felons on the National Instant Check System, NICS.
Gee, that's great. Except for the corruption in the system. This kind of legislation proposes to put a permanent black mark on the record of any person, based upon a single evaluation at a single time in that person's life, on the word of "experts" who not only do the evaluations, but then profit from the treatment of those whom they have declared "dangerous". Experts whose methods are so flawed that the false positive evaluation of "dangerousness" would falsely adjudicate 17 to 50 people as "dangerous" for every truly dangerous person set free.
This black mark is permanent. It will deprive people of jobs, income, possibly even credit ratings and social relationships. It will forbid from defending themselves from criminal attack, making them forever more vulnerable to crime. This in a population that is already 10 to 13 more likely than the general population to be the targets of crime and violence. Hope and safety, damaged and gone.
According to a letter dated Sept 6, 2013 from Senator Tom Coburn, his amendment would merely encourage states to enact a relief from such disabilities under the penalty of losing some Federal funds. Unfortunately, that does not address the disability to civil rights already in Federal law, from which Congress has withheld all funding for appeal and removal. Making Sen. Coburn's amendment toothless and irrelevant.
The existing laws decreeing who are dangerous may be horribly flawed, but conservatives like them, and liberal like them. Passing more just like them gives everyone the chance to say, "See, we did something about those horrible mass shootings!" Rather like saying, "That black man killed three people and raped a white woman! Look there's another one! Let's pass a law!" Now that we're all too politically correct to endorse racial profiling and racial Jim Crow, there's still a class of people to take the place of the n-word in state-sanctioned bigotry. A class of people whom everyone can agree need to be stripped of civil rights and terrorized by law.
And you think this will make you safer? Why? Because it worked so well in the past with colored minorities?"
