I get it, though. This same debate comes up often among thinking LGBTs.

There is no such thing as "state-sanctioned monogamous marital pacts." Heterosexual couples are not required to be monogamous and many homosexual couples - married or not - are not monogamous either.
There is still freedom for couples to create their own version of a relationship that works without having to sacrifice the benefits granted via taxation and citizenship that are extended to couples that agree to take out a license.
Maybe the whole thing should be scrapped - no marriage for anyone!! That's fine with me, but I'm not going to push that rock uphill. That effort can be lead by the heterosexuals that want to be free and I'll sign up to help y'all after my friends that had to leave the country to be with their partners can move back to America to join us.
