Don B, 7/21/2013 - 3:53pm "The race card and a grain of salt
Here's one reason why I take the race card with a grain of salt: the ratio of white people with disabilities and earnings of from $0 to $14,999 outnumber the able-bodied black people in that earnings range by 4.22 to 1. Of course there is still higher unemployment among black people; the non-disabled white people outnumber non-disabled black people in the census by 5.82 to 1. But I don't see anyone marching to protest the social and employment discrimination I've had to face.
Blacks and women have monopolized the discussion of discrimination for decades, to the exclusion of almost all others. If it isn't racism or sexism, it just isn't ism. If the EEOC treated disability discrimination the same as racism and sexism, it would be serving an awful lot more white people than black people. And since (last time I looked) black women comprise the largest plurality of EEOC employees, I can't see that happening any time soon.
I'm sorry that Mr. Obama or any black man has had to endure groundless suspicion in department stores (personally, I didn't like the nightmares about people hunting me down to kill me), but if black people had to face the same kinds of presumptions of dangerousness and kangaroo justice that others have to face under state mental health codes, you might think that Jim Crow had come back. But I don't see anyone marching to protest that. I can't see a any number of black people dressing up in straight jackets and chanting, "I'm crazy too!"
