Ty Bridges, 12/29/2008 - 1:04pm "I appreciate Ms. Simpon's (Tulsa County's) side of the dispute. I think I understand the City's side... But, what about the taxpayer's side? Any monies paid by the City or County all come from the same place, the taxpayer's pocket. We already pay a jail tax to fund the jail... Additionally we pay property tax to fund the County to make up any shortfall. The Sherriff should be able to manage the jail on the budget he bid, and not look to the taxpayers (again). Futhermore, why is the County trying to gouge the City for jail services? The City did make an offer.... It proposed that it be able to keep as many as 35 inmates in the jail each day at no cost. If the city averages more than 35 inmates per day over a one-year period, the city would pay the County the same daily per-inmate rates as the state Department of Corrections, which is $27. The County wants to charge the City a direct fee of $54.13 per City inmate (I would call this 'gouging' the City). The TCCJA Trust was set up to pool resources, support, and funds to make the jail happen. Tulsa is a part of that Trust... So why would you charge a Trust member more money to house inmates than you would the Department of Corrections? Of course other municipalities don't object to the charge.... because they have their own jails and won't have to pay it! The County and the City need to work together and stay out of the taxpayer's pocket! And the Sherriff needs to manage the jail more efficiently to work within the confines of the jail tax and the County budget."
