freedoms ring, 8/11/2013 - 12:14am "Pseudonyms and noms de plume hold an important place in the tradition of public discourse. Writers who assume names shed ego, letting their words stand on their own. Writers who seek to make names for themselves at the same time they try to make social statements sometimes, but not always confuse their multiple purposes.
An early lesson from the era of network communication is to protect your identity. Anonymity lets people communicate without fear of intimidation, stalking and actual real life retaliation. Anonymity lets us speak without fear of retaliation by employers.
Media outlets routinely refer to "official sources" that lack names or faces. Anonymity lets us speak without fear of retaliation by "officials" who can selectively contrive criminal cases against constituents who publish critical viewpoints. It provides us a modicum of protection against officials who proudly admit they fabricate the true origins of investigations in a process called "parallel construction" - a process that facilitates selective prosecution without identifying the true source or motivation behind the investigation.
Contrary to the claim in the Outsiders column -- published under an identifiable byline that we're told helps assure accuracy -- there is no trend toward prohibiting anonymity in Tulsa's leading online media forums. Tulsa World lately restored access for the community at large to publish comments anonymously. If this comment goes past preview comment, it's because Urban Tulsa takes the high road and does not demand we show our papers before we speak our mind.
